Beyond CSS animation: GSAP ScrollTrigger and timelines

CSS animations cover simple effects. For scroll-linked, pinned and sequenced interactions, GSAP’s ScrollTrigger and timelines give a level of control CSS alone can’t.

As a Frontend Developer, animation is an important part of building a good user experience.

Many projects rely on CSS animations or CSS transitions, which work well for simple interactions.
But when interfaces become more complex or when building modern landing pages, controlling animations with CSS alone can become limiting.

That’s where GSAP really stands out.

Two features that I find especially powerful:

🔹 ScrollTrigger

This feature allows you to connect animations directly to the scroll position.

You can easily:

  • Trigger animations when elements enter the viewport
  • Scrub animation progress with scrolling
  • Pin sections during scroll
  • Build interactive storytelling sections

🔹 Timelines

Instead of coordinating multiple animations manually, Timelines allow you to organize animations in a clear sequence.

You can:

  • Control the order of animations
  • Add delays easily
  • Play, pause, or restart the entire animation
  • Synchronize multiple animations together

In many cases, animations stop being just visual effects and become part of the overall user experience.

If you’re building modern web interfaces, GSAP offers a level of control that can be hard to achieve with CSS alone.
